At Walker, we hope our work inspires new generations to service, so they too may work to improve the lives of children and families, in ways that we, perhaps, cannot yet imagine.
Variety Club Helps to Brighten Holidays at Walker
The holidays were made a little brighter for twenty Walker students thanks to the generosity of the Variety Club of New England.
Twenty children from the Walker Intensive Residential Program were among those hosted at Showcase Cinemas in Revere, where they were treated by Variety Club volunteers to lunch, ice cream, popcorn, and a showing of the 3D movie Tangled. After the film, there was a surprise visit from Santa, who gave the kids new backpacks filled with presents.
The children in residential treatment at Walker typically spend the holidays at the Walker Needham campus, where several are waiting for the potential placement with a new foster family. Events like the Variety Club holiday party are a wonderful way to enrich their lives with happy childhood experiences while strenghtening their connections to the community.
The Variety Club was created in 1928 to improve the quality of life for children who are underprivileged, physical and mentally challenged, ill, abused, neglected and abandoned. The club has supported Walker for more than a decade, and in past years club volunteers generously donated several vehicles for transporting Walker children to community activities. Thanks to the ongoing support of philanthropic partners like the Variety Club, Walker is providing help and hope to children who are facing very serious challenges.
